Discectomy

Discectomy

discectomy

Spinal surgery has come a long way with recent technological advancements. Conventional open spine surgery meant large incisions, long recovery periods, painful rehabilitation, and high complications rate while not as high success rate. Technology has made endoscopic surgery of the spine a reality and the Percutaneous Endoscopic Discectomy is now a better alternative to a spinal fusion. According to the Spine Institute of San Diego, an endoscopic discectomy procedure is up to 95 percent effective at eliminating sciatica pain caused by disc herniation. Sciatica is a pain condition caused by compression of the spinal nerve. This compression is most often the result of a herniated lumbar disc.
Endoscopic Discectomy, also sometimes called micro-decompression or microdiscectomy, is a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure performed on patients with a herniated lumbar disc. During this surgery, a surgeon will remove portions of the herniated disc to relieve pressure on the spinal nerve column. Our spine surgeons are pioneers and innovators in the field and perform a hybrid procedure combining regenerative medicine with endoscopic discectomy. During the surgery, our surgeons apply autologous mesenchymal stem cells in the degenerated and damaged tissue to stimulate and promote healing and regeneration. These two treatments combined together are the best of both worlds; the mechanical compression is corrected and the damaged tissue is regenerated, enhancing the recovery with quicker and long-lasting results. This minimally invasive and innovative approach not only eliminates pain but also targets the root cause of the problem and promotes a healing process to prevent the pain from coming back. Stem Cell Therapy is a new and innovative treatment in Orthopedics and Regenerative Medicine that is becoming a better alternative to conventional surgery for neck and back pain.
Below is a typical itinerary for someone undergoing Endoscopic Discectomy surgery with our spine surgeons:
  • Day 1: Arrival to destination, consultations and lab work – spend night in hotel
  • Day 2: Outpatient surgery – spend night in hotel
  • Day 3: Rest and recover – spend night in hotel
  • Day 4: Follow-up consultation – return home
Our spine surgeons will provide a no-cost evaluation of your case to determine if Endoscopic Discectomy is right for you and determine the specific protocol of the treatment. Simply contact us so we can gather some information about your symptoms, retrieve any medical images you may have, and we will submit your case to our surgeons for review. The Endoscopic Discectomy Procedure

Conventional Surgery:
  • Open Surgery with high risk
  • Surgical/scar tissue developed
  • Frequent post-op complications
  • General anesthesia
  • Medium to long recovery times
  • In-patient with 3-night hospitalization
  • Very costly
  • 75% improvement lasts 3 years
  • 40% chance of Failed Back Syndrome
Endoscopic Discectomy:
  • Non-surgical procedure with low risk
  • No scar tissue
  • Little to none complications
  • Local anesthesia
  • Short recovery times
  • Out-patient procedure
  • Inexpensive
  • Avoids Failed Back Syndrome
  • 85%- 99% improvement lasts 5+ years
The goal of an Endoscopic Discectomy is to remove the disc material placing pressure on the nerves. The procedure is done under general anesthesia. You will be unconscious during the entire procedure and unable to feel anything. The procedure is performed with the patient lying face down. The process goes as follows:
  • A less than 1-inch incision will be made directly over the affected disc
  • An endoscope with a camera is inserted to help your surgeon see the affected area
  • The surgeon may remove a small portion of bone that protects the root nerve
  • With small instruments inserted through the endoscope your surgeon will remove the damaged herniated tissue relieving the pressure on the nerve
  • Stem Cell Therapy is applied in the injured/damaged tissues
  • The incision is closed with sutures
  • The patient is usually discharged the same day or the next morning
The spinal nerve now has the space it needs inside the spinal column, so any pain caused by pinching on the nerve should stop.

The Spinal Stem Cell Therapy Procedure

Our doctors have mastered the technology to isolate the maximum number of viable adult Mesenchymal Stem Cells to treat Arthritis. There are three ways of obtaining these cells from the human body:
  • Adipose Tissue (Fat Tissue): Fat near the bellybutton is extracted via micro-liposuction and processed to isolate Mesenchymal Stem Cells
  • Bone Marrow: Blood is extracted from bone marrow near the hip and processed to isolate Mesenchymal Stem Cells
  • Peripheral Blood: Blood is drawn from arm and processed to isolate Mesenchymal Stem Cells
This minimally invasive and innovative approach not only eliminates pain but also targets the root cause of the problem and promotes a healing process to prevent the pain from coming back. Because of its effectiveness, Stem Cell Therapy is becoming a better alternative to conventional surgery for neck and back pain. This minimally invasive method of treatment involves injecting Mesenchymal Stem Cells and a mixture of medical grade Ozone and Oxygen gas into the herniated and bulging discs. Ozone and Oxygen allow the dehydration of the nucleus pulposus of the disc and, in addition to its analgesic effect, it has an antioxidant scavenger system which is regulated to act as an anti-inflammatory response. These dehydration and anti-inflammatory effects shrink the disc in size to reduce hernias and bulging in order to decompress the spinal cord and reduce or eliminate any pressure or impingement of the nerve roots.
After injecting the ozone inside the injured discs, our surgeons apply autologous Mesenchymal Stem Cells and P.R.P., which turn into chondrocytes and osteocytes to produce and maintain the cartilaginous matrix. Additionally, these autologous biological agents stimulate the fibroblasts in the body to generate collagen and fiber, which, in combination with the chondrocytes, repair the damaged disc tissue/walls. This method is suggested for both prolapsed and intervertebral disc. The procedure is painless and involves injecting a thin needle into the affected disc guided by live fluoroscopy. The patient is given a mild sedation for comfort and only local anesthesia is used, allowing our patients to walk off the surgical table on their own and going back to their hotel/home for recovery.
Depending on the severity of your spine problem you may need more than one session of Stem Cell Therapy with Ozone Discolysis. Our experienced team will review your case very carefully to diagnose your medical condition’s stage and recommend the right treatment and protocol for you. Historically, our providers’ patients have achieved 75% – 99% improvement on their condition within 6 to 10 months after treatment.

Recovering from Endoscopic Discectomy Surgery

As soon as the procedure is finished, on average, patients experience a 50%-70% improvement and they are able to leave the surgery center walking and without pain. Our surgeons recommend limiting physical activity and preventing bending or lifting for 3-4 weeks following the Microdiscectomy. This first stage is critical in the success of the treatment as the newly generated tissue must adhere well to the existing structure of the spine. After the week 4 our surgeons recommend beginning stretching and conditioning exercises, which will be provided to you upon returning home from your first session. The improvement continues to increase with a stronger back and as new tissue is generated. B y month 8-10, 95% of patients report 80%-95% overall improvement.
