SPINAL FUSION SURGERY
Spinal surgery has come a long way with recent technological advancements. Conventional open spine surgery meant large incisions, long recovery periods, painful rehabilitation, and high complications rate while not as high success rate.
Spinal fusion is a surgical procedure used to correct problems with the small bones in the spine (vertebrae). It is essentially a “welding” process. The basic idea is to fuse together two or more vertebrae so that they heal into a single, solid bone. This is done to eliminate painful motion or to restore stability to the spine.
There are many potential reasons for a surgeon to consider fusing the vertebrae. These include: treatment of a fractured (broken) vertebra; correction of deformity (spinal curves or slippages); elimination of pain from painful motion; treatment of instability; and treatment of some disc herniations.
There are many different specific techniques to try to fuse the vertebrae together. The surgery can be performed either through an incision in the back, the abdomen, or a combination of both. In many cases metal screws and rods are placed from the back into the bones to hold them in position while the fusion occurs. During an interbody fusion, the surgeon removes the intervertebral disc and places either a bone graft or a metal or plastic cage, or a combination of these in its place. The decision on what type of fusion is best for each patient is based on their specific complaints and the cause of symptoms. Spinal fusion can be very effective in the properly selected patient.
Below is a typical itinerary for someone undergoing Spinal Fusion surgery with our spine surgeons:
Our spine surgeons will provide a no-cost evaluation of your case to determine if Spinal Fusion is right for you and determine the specific protocol of the treatment. Simply contact us so we can gather some information about your symptoms, retrieve any medical images you may have, and we will submit your case to our surgeons for review. Once the review has been completed, we will explain in detail the surgeons’ assessment of your case and recommendation for treatment. We can also coordinate complimentary consultation over the phone with the surgeons so you can further discuss your case and address all your concerns.
BENEFITS OF spinal fusion SURGERY ABROAD
Choosing to undergo Spinal Fusion surgery with our spine surgeons has several advantages:
THE spinal fusion PROCEDURE
There are several different techniques that may be used to fuse the spine. There are also different “approaches” your surgeon can take to reach your spine.
- Anterior Lumbar Interbody Fusion: Your doctor goes in through your belly
- Posterior Fusion: Your doctor goes in from the back
After he makes the incision, he moves the muscles and structures to the side to see your spine. The joint or joints between the damaged or painful disks are removed.
Your surgeon can use screws, rods, or pieces of bone (called a graft) from another part of your body to connect the disks and keep them from moving. A bone graft that comes from your body is usually taken from your hip or pelvis. Bone from another person is called a donor graft. Some doctors place a substance called bone morphogenetic protein into the spine instead. It helps to stimulate bone growth.
RECOVERING FROM spinal fusion SURGERY
Patients tend to feel more discomfort after Spinal Fusion surgery comparing to other types of spine procedures. Our surgeons recommend limiting physical activity and preventing bending or lifting for weeks pending on each patient’s condition. In general, the earliest evidence of bone healing is not apparent on X-ray until at least six weeks following surgery. During this time, the patient’s activity is generally restricted.
