Gastric Sleeve

Gastric Sleeve surgery, also known as a sleeve gastrectomy, vertical sleeve, gastric sleeve resection and tube gastrectomy, is a newer type of weight loss surgery, where approximately 85% of the stomach is removed. This morphs the stomach into a new, tube-like shape resembling a “sleeve”. The operation is done via laparoscope, utilizing tiny incisions around the abdominal area, avoiding the need for a large incision, which may cause a huge scar.
The Gastric Sleeve is also extremely effective at reducing the feeling of hunger, as the portion of the stomach that produces the “hunger hormone”, Ghrelin, is removed. Eliminating this hormone helps you to feel more full after a smaller amount of food and help you feel satisfied after eating longer.
One of the greatest benefits of our sleeve gastrectomy is that it does not affect the intestinal tract and requires no bypass. This will allow you to avoid any related complications, such as anemia, intestinal obstructions, or nutritional deficiencies from an inability to absorb proper nutrients from your meals. The Gastric Sleeve is also a viable option for those who are obese, but have a lower BMI, or are suffering from Crohn’s disease, or similar conditions which would make other more invasive gastric surgeries much riskier.
Below is a typical itinerary for someone getting the gastric sleeve with our surgeons:
  • Day 1: Arrival to destination of surgery – pre-op consultations and pre-op tests – spend night in hotel
  • Day 2: Pre-op tests followed by surgery – spend night in hospital
  • Day 3: Post-op tests, begin liquid diet – spend night in hotel
  • Day 4: Final post-op follow-up consultation – spend night in hotel
  • Day 5: Return home

Gastric Sleeve Surgery Abroad

Choosing to undergo Gastric Sleeve surgery with our surgeons has several advantages:
  • It can save you up to 70% compared to U.S. prices
  • Highest quality with U.S.-Trained Board-Certified bariatric surgeons in Mexico
  • Best results with only FDA approved materials and implants
  • Our surgeons offer the latest bariatric surgery procedures and technology
A gastric sleeve surgery can cost as much as $29,000 USD in the U.S. and, because it is generally not covered by most Health Insurance plans, is typically paid out-of-pocket or financed with high interest rate loans. With Health & Wellness Bazaar, traveling to Mexico for gastric sleeve surgery is safe, easy, and affordable with surgery packages starting at $4,770 USD with minimum wait times.
Our medical providers are able to offer such low pricing compared to the U.S. because of the low cost of land, labor, and materials in the destinations where they practice. The safety, quality, and efficacy of the gastric sleeve is never compromised despite the low pricing and the patient experience is well beyond U.S. standards. Currently we have bariatric surgeons in Tijuana, Monterrey, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and Cancun, Mexico. Please contact us for more information.

The Gastric Sleeve Procedure

Patients who undergo this form of weight loss surgery get fuller faster, feel fuller longer, and lose weight rapidly. During gastric sleeve surgery, nearly 85 percent of your stomach is removed. The portion of your stomach that is left will take the shape of a sleeve, reducing the amount of food you are able to consume. What is left of your stomach is already connected to your small intestine, so nutrients will still be absorbed as your food digests. For this form of bariatric surgery, it is important to know that the success rate is high with long lasting results but also dependent on your commitment to losing weight, keeping it off, eating right, and leading an active, healthy lifestyle.
At the beginning of your surgery, you will be placed under general anesthesia. Small laparoscopic incisions will be made in the abdomen, and the reshaping of your stomach will begin. During gastric sleeve surgery our bariatric surgeons, up to 85 percent of your stomach can be reduced. The unwanted portion will be removed and your new stomach will be shaped into an oblong tube or sleeve. Using staples, your newly created stomach will be sealed and your incisions will be closed. This very successful bariatric treatment will allow you to maintain a healthy weight.

Gastric Sleeve Candidates

Sleeve Gastrectomy surgery is done to help you lose excess weight and reduce your risk of potentially life-threatening weight-related health problems. Gastric Sleeve is good for you if:
  • You are 15 – 54 years old
  • Your body mass index (BMI) is 30 or higher
  • You have a serious weight-related health problem, such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or severe sleep apnea.

Advantages and Benefits of Gastric Sleeve Surgery:

There are multiple advantages of undergoing gastric sleeve surgery, including:
  • Rapid weight loss - In most cases patients reduce their body weight by more than half in just four to six months.
  • Less hungry - Because your stomach is smaller after surgery, you will become fuller quicker, feel fuller longer, and won't feel as hungry in general. The portion of your stomach that produces the Ghrelin hormone - the hunger hormone - will be eliminated and discarded during surgery.
  • Safer than other weight loss surgeries - Because this form of bariatric surgery removes only a portion of the stomach, there is less of a risk for infection, rejection, or other serious complications. Other weight loss treatments may require the small intestine to be cut and reattached to the stomach, but with gastric sleeve surgery, your intestines stay intact and untouched. Also, unlike the LAP-BAND® system, the sleeve doesn't require a foreign object to reside within your body in order for the treatment to be successful. The hour-long procedure requires that a patient be completely committed to losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
  • Revisable and convenient - the hour-long procedure requires that a patient be completely committed to losing weight and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Over time, the sleeve may become stretched and could require a revision to a gastric bypass surgery. A surgical revision is a simple procedure and can easily be performed by a certified bariatric professional.

Preparing for Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Quitting smoking is essential prior to a sleeve gastrectomy or any other weight loss surgery. Smoking greatly increases the chances of blood clots, pneumonia, infection and can greatly reduce your recovery time after surgery. Fully quitting smoking is extremely beneficial to your health, but know that for at least one month before and after your gastric sleeve surgery, you must stop smoking.
Your surgeon will also advise you on a specific diet prior to the surgery, and our experienced staff is also available to help you plan out your future dietary and lifestyle changes once you have completed your gastric sleeve procedure with our providers.

Recovering from Gastric Sleeve Surgery

Post-Surgery: The First Two Weeks
The surgery itself generally takes one to two hours, after which you will likely stay in the hospital for a couple of days. Your abdomen may be swollen or sore, but your surgeon will prescribe pain medications, if appropriate, to help you be more comfortable. You need to allow your body time to adjust to the surgery, which means that you will follow a liquid-only diet during this time. You will need to follow the instructions provided by your surgical staff precisely and may want to have a family member or friend take notes. You don’t want to do anything that could cause complications after surgery.
Post-Surgery: The First Two Months
Once you have been released from the hospital and have followed a liquid diet for a couple of weeks, you may slowly transition to solid foods. This means that for two weeks after a liquid diet, you may have pureed foods. After those two weeks, you may proceed to solid foods if your doctor has approved you to do so. When you transition to solid foods, you will need to change the way you approach eating to follow these guidelines:
  • Eating slowly
  • Eating only small quantities
  • Chewing food thoroughly until it is completely mashed
  • Drinking beverages 30 minutes before a meal, not during the meal
You will need to follow these instructions for the rest of your life, so it’s essential to think of the entire vertical sleeve gastrectomy as a lifestyle change, rather than a temporary solution to obesity.
